BMI {& Weigh in Wednesday}

A couple weeks ago, I had an appointment with my doctor. It was a normal yearly appointment and I was due for a prescription refill and bloodwork.

I've been thinking quite a bit about BMI and what mine is/should be. It's sort of a frustrating concept, especially for a short woman with quite a bit of muscle (I did an evaluation at a gym a few years ago and they said I had way more muscle than they thought I would). So I guess it's a good thing that I'm not all fat under my skin! They told me that it was just like having more fuel to burn calories.

Since I've been thinking about my BMI because they talk about it frequently on Supersize vs Superskinny I figured I would check mine out. Big mistake.

With my current weight and my height of 5 foot 3 inches, my BMI is 30.6. That puts me in the obese category. Ouch. That was a nasty blow after feeling like I was doing so well.

I found my BMI information at the Mayo Clinic website.

Hahahahaha dead.

I asked my doctor what he thought about it and he said that BMI isn't always super reliable, since it doesn't take into account muscle mass. We talked about it for a while and we decided that I should aim for a goal weight of somewhere around 150 and see how I feel from there. That still puts me in the overweight category but he said that I shouldn't be too worried about that.

He showed me another tool that is used to determine a healthy weight. The hip to waist ratio scale. This gives a good indication if you have fat around your midsection, which is the most dangerous place to have it. Increased fat around the waist brings with it an increased risk for heart disease, colorectal cancer, and diabetes {Source}. All things that run rampant in my family. Anyway, my number on that scale is crazy too... 0.89. Which puts me at a high risk for health problems.

So, I'm hoping that I can keep making healthy changes and improve these numbers! I've got about 23 pounds between me and my next big goal. I also continue to have small goals of 5 pounds each.

Overall, not an exciting doctors appointment. I wasn't super thrilled when I left. Then I got my blood work results back. My cholesterol is high. Again. It was high like 3 years ago, and I lost weight, down to about 175 and it was fine when I checked it then. This time apparently it didn't help. I'm mad. I feel like I'm working hard and my body is just like

Anyways. Moving on to Weigh in Wednesday with Heather, Ash, and Jess.

This week was decent food wise. I got my 30 mins of exercise in every day. I've been rocking that challenge! Here's what the scale said this week: I lost 2.6 pounds this week. I'm pumped over that! Absolutely NOT what I thought I was going to see on the scale!

Height: 5'3"
Last Week: 174.4
This Week: 171.8
Change: -2.6 pounds
Total Loss: 38.2 pounds

How was your week? What's your BMI and your goal? Or, do you think it's all rubbish? I want to know! Leave me some comment love!

  1. GREAT loss this week. You are doing so well! I understand why you're discouraged, but those numbers will get better as you approach goal weight. My cholesterol is fine, but my lipids are high, and I know it's because of my diet. At any rate, you will get there. I have a friend in med school who is like "BMI IS THE DUMBEST THING EVER it is so inaccurate and doesn't mean anything!" So I'm glad your doctor introduced you to the hip to waist--and I'm glad you posted about it because I never knew about it! Keep up the good work, you are doing awesome :)

    1. Thank you! I know it's not really accurate, but it's still frustrating to see overweight on that stupid thing! Oh well, I think I'll throw it out the window anyway!

  2. Congrats on your loss! BMI can be incredibly inaccurate especially since there are so many ways to measure it. The hip to waist is interesting. I always preach going on non-scale victories and measurements as a way to track loss and progress. It is great that your doctor is so open and helpful! Congrats on all your hard work!

    1. Thank you! I'm glad I have a good relationship with my doctor. I actually work with him, so it's a really good thing! I feel like I've never gotten to a place in my weight loss where I've had to think about an end number. I thought the BMI scale might help. Guess not!

  3. Great loss of 2 lbs despite the outcome of the doctor's appointments! My BMI is 25.8 and my goal is to get it under that...weighing in at 155 would do that...that's 10 lbs.

As for cholesterol, have you watched Forks over Knives on Netflix? It talks about a raw food plant based diet and how it helps with your health and has been known to bring cholesterol down without the use of medications.

    1. Thank you! The cholesterol is frustrating, but I think it's going to be a genetic thing for me, regardless of how healthy I eat. I'll likely end up on medication one day. I'd rather that than the consequences! I'm going to do my best to get it to a better number on my own though, while I can.

  4. Nice loss this week, Winter!

BMI is terribly inaccurate and I'm glad your Doctor said that. I had a discussion with a nurse about the issues with BMI, as right now, I'm actually borderline overweight and normal. I think it's time to chuck that tool out the ol' door!

    1. Thanks! I'm totally with you on that one! I really thought it might help me to figure out a good goal weight, but in the end, I don't think it's going to be that helpful!

  5. I am sorry you had a frustrating doctor's appointment. I am glad that the doctor seemed to realize and acknowledge that there is no exact science to a healthy body weight. Great weight loss!!! I think think all we can ever do is keep regrouping and tweaking our plan.

  8. Great loss this week! I *hate* BMI. It can be really misleading. As far as numbers go, I only keep tabs on two numbers: the scale and my body fat percentage. And even those can fluctuate a bit, so with those I mainly look for downward motion ;-)

    1. Thank! I shudder to think what my body fat percentage is. I wonder how to calculate that!
