My Parenting Pet Peeve

I'm a pretty easy going kind of parent. At least that's what I'd like to think anyway. I'm not super opinionated one way or the other, except when it comes to car seat safety and maybe a little bit about immunizations. Someday I'll post about that. Maybe. And obviously, I get rather upset if you are doing something to harm your child.

Mostly, my parenting motto is to do what works for you and your family. That's what I always tell people, if they ask. Because honestly, I'm just winging it here, and all I can tell you is what I've tried, and how it's worked for us. There's no telling whether it will work for you or not.

The one thing that really bothers me about parenting in general, is complaining. Actually, not even just complaining really, because parenting is hard and we all have our moments. My big parenting pet peeve is when people constantly complain about something, but then refuse to change anything, or try anything else to make it stop.

What are you looking for? A pity party? With balloons and cake?

Seriously! Just try something else, if what you're doing isn't working! Put on your big kid panties and do something.

Baby not sleeping? Try sleep training. Try co sleeping. Try not co sleeping. Try swaddling, sleep sacks, white noise, ambient light, the 5 S technique. Just try! Really though, as long as it's safe, just give it a try! Don't just continue to complain about it. Please.

Child throwing tantrums? Read a book. Ask your grandparents or parents. Google it. Anything. Be proactive people!

Child not eating? Try baby led weaning. Try NOT baby let weaning. Try purees. Try those weird little squeeze bottles. Try dressing up like a giraffe and doing a dance ritual whilst feeding your child organic foods. I'm going to try that one tonight.

Hahaha, really...I might.

And I'm not talking about complaining a little over coffee or when you're super frustrated. I'm talking about Facebook. Get off Facebook, and do something about your problem. Facebook is not going to solve it for you. I don't know when, we, as a society, started thinking it would.

Anyway, I guess the thing that really bothers me about the whole thing, is watching people complain publicly about their kids (or even just life in general) all the time, and knowing there are people out there who would kill to have a baby (or have it as good as they do). Would give anything just to have a potty training issue. It kind of breaks my heart a little for them. Not that these people don't love their kids, I'm absolutely sure they do love them. I just find it a bit rude. Like complaining about your hair in front of someone who has none. Catch my drift?

Maybe that's why I'm drifting away from Facebook in general. Who knows? Maybe it's just lost it's novelty.

I've been writing this post in my head for a really long time now. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings too badly. If you think I'm talking about you, I could be. At the very least, it's something to think about, and it's off my chest now! Like I said before, I don't know what I'm doing, but what I do know is that I'm grateful for what I have and that is a happy, healthy, spirited child who tests me every day, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. \

  1. Dear heavens. I hate the complaining about people's children {or even their spouse} on Facebook. I understand venting to close people, or even asking for help on Facebook but I complaining.. I can't stand it either!

  2. People complaining about kids and other issues that should never be posted in a public place is part of the reason I left facebook over a year ago and never looked back. It has been incredibly freeing to not have a facebook, and I still am able to be in touch with people who care about me and who I care about. I don't think this was an offensive post at all; I think you hit it right on the money :)

  3. I have a good friend who I feel thrives on the "I am a mom therefore I am stressed and there is never enough time in the day" kinda attitude. No good!

  4. I get this, even taking it away from babies. People who go on Facebook and complain about crap and then do absolutely nothing to change their bad habits. Stop complaining and DO something. I go on Facebook now, rarely, simple because I find I'm constantly unfriending people who bitch, bitch, bitch and moan, moan, moan.

I love your comment too about you're complaining about your baby, while someone else is trying to conceive. SO TRUE. I'm 30 now and am constantly being asked, "when I'll get pregnant." I don't know, maybe I can't? Stop asking, because what if I can't? And really, is it any of your damn business?

(As you can see, I totally relate to this entire post, even being babyless! Thanks for sharing!!!)

    1. Its true. It applies to everything really. If people would stop throwing themselves a pity party and think about it for just a second, their stupid first world problems really aren't problems at all. There are people in the world MUCH worse off than they are, and they should really just stop complaining, and change it, if it bothers them that bad. It really applies to weight loss too.
