Educate Yourself!

Linking up again with Kristen for Baby Talk tuesdays!

Before Harper was born, Casey and I both educated ourselves on sleep training. I'm glad I read the book before her birth, because it was sooooo long and repetitive that I literally would fall asleep learning about sleep. Anyway, after a lot of recommendations, I chose this one.

I was quite happy with the way it taught sleep training, mostly because it can be read by people who have all different mindsets about parenting (ie. for or against cry it out, etc). But like I said, it was extremely repetitive and made me very drowsy at night (that and the massive child sucking up all my energy from the inside!).

I am also very happy with the results that this book has given us. Harper has been sleeping wonderfully since she was around 6 weeks old (no, we didn't train her then, but the techniques in this book helped us to sooth her and put her back to sleep).

While I was away over the weekend, I was able to pick up a book I've been wanting to read for a couple months now.

Around the time Harper reached her first birthday, I felt like there was a shift. Like I didn't know how to communicate with her. It's frustrating to tell her "No" and have her look me right in the eye, and keep on going. I didn't know whether she was just defying me to get a reaction, kinda like they do when they throw things on the floor over and over again, or if she literally just didn't know the meaning of the word no.

I'm already eating this book up, and I don't usually do that with books that aren't suspenseful or full of action. It's really not my style of book but I needed something to help me, before it got so I really didn't know what to do.

So far, I like what I'm learning from this book, despite a bit of difference in opinions on spanking (I'm both for and against, depending on what the specific personality of the child needs, the book seems to be against). It has reinforced some things I learned in first year psychology (and at work), like you can't reason with a toddler, they literally cannot understand reason. I've also learned a few new things too. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of it!

I think I need to do a little more reading on feeding toddlers too, because suppertime seems to be a real struggle for us.

What did you read to prepare yourself for parenthood?

  1. Our pediatrician recommended healthy sleep habits, happy child when clay was 6 weeks old and we were only getting three hours of sleep a night. Needless to say, I wish I had read it while I was pregnant!! I didn't even make it through the whole book but we did implement some of the ideas. I'll have to check out The Happiest Toddler on the Block!

    1. I'm sooo glad I read it before having her. I was so overwhelmed when we got home that I wouldn't have had the mind power to do it then. Thanks for reading!
