40 Bags in 40 Days {Days 1-10}

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that I've been working away on a 40 day project called 40 Bags in 40 Days (if you don't follow me, please do!). It comes from a blog called White House Black Shutters which I actually found via Instagram. It coincides with lent, but I'm not really doing it for that purpose. I'm doing it because in a year (or so), we will be moving for the last time, and we have an immense amount of stuff in this house. I can't even really tell you where it has all come from, but it's here. I'm not even the kind of person who is okay with having a lot of clutter, but that's the thing...it's not out in the open. It's in drawers, closets, the spare room, the sun room, and the (dun dun dunnnnnn) basement!

I've moved about 6 times, if you count the times to and from university, between apartments, and everything in between. It's a big hassle. I hate moving. Which is why I think this challenge has come as such a great time for us. Not only is it time to dust out the cobwebs and spring clean, but it'll give me a good long head start on getting things organized and ready to go. It'll be soooo much less to take when I'm all done!

So, here are days 1 to 10. I'm a little late posting this, but it's been a busy week.

Disclaimer, not all of these photos contain pictures of bags. That would be lame.

Most of this stuff was sitting in a basket in the cupboard. Bottles we don't use anymore, baby food things that we've outgrown. The breast pump has been hiding behind Harper's changing table since I stopped pumping. I don't even have anywhere to put this stuff yet, but at least it's all together!

This garbage came from a dresser in the small bedroom upstairs. It consists of clothes that should have been thrown away a long time ago. You know...old socks with holes, shirts with stains, pants with rips, sweaters I've had since high school...

This bag also came from the dresser in the small bedroom. It contains clothes that don't fit or we don't want anymore, but are good enough to donate. I still have this bag in the spare room upstairs, and I continue to add things to it as I go through everything.

This bag was step one in organizing my top kitchen cupboard. Throwing out packaging we didn't need anymore and making room.

Until this bag got tied up, Harper's bath toys lived on the bottom of the tub. This tub isn't a shower, so Harper is the only one who uses it, but I still think it's better to put them away so they can dry better.

I saw that someone else did this project somewhere, probably Instagram or a blog I follow. Anyway, I thought it was a great idea because I had a massive amount of gift bags from various events kicking around the sunroom. It's awesome to have it all organized neatly in one place! I got rid of the ones that we written on or ripped or were just not usable.

This was part two of the cupboard organization. I think it'll have more parts over time, but this was the big leap. Getting my dry foods into large storage bins and labeling them. I found free labels on Pinterest and took advantage of them. It's so neat and tidy now! (Aside from the fact that it's a makeshift cupboard because this house didn't really have actual cupboards haha).

I took the idea from the gift bag organization and ran with it. I had this thing full of my cupcake supplies but they were all just kind of haphazardly thrown in there, in a giant mess. Now it's neat and tidy and rid of anything I won't use.

This was the first of many drawers. It's under the china cabinet. I seriously found something in there that I meant to give a friend who had a baby....3 years ago...Yikes!

Day 10 was my craft drawer. It was all just kind of thrown in there. Glue sticks everywhere, hemp rope everywhere, papers all out of sorts. Now everything is bagged off and tidy! Got rid of everything I was never going to use. It's not even all my different craft things. I have all my sewing supplies (neatly, actually) stored in the sunroom, my knitting stuff is in a basket in the living room, and my cross stitch stuff is in the living room where I can access it and pick away at it.

  1. You did such a great job documenting this! I am also participating, but trying to just average 10 bags each weekend!

    1. Thanks! To be honest, I did a lot of binge cleaning because I actually returned to work from mat leave the day this challenge started. On my days off I try to do a bunch of bags so I can come home from work, spend time with Harper, and unwind.

    1. Thank you! I am working away at it. It really is overwhelming. You don't even want to know what my sunroom and basement still look like, but after doing a little at a time, it feels much lighter, and like I can actually manage it!
