Goals for 2013: Retrospectively

I thought of writing this post ages ago, and had to write myself a note so I wouldn't forget.

Last year, I wrote myself some goals for the new year.

Here they are:

Personal
Survive the remainder of this pregnancy.
Not die during childbirth.
Keep said infant alive by means of giving it sustenance from my body. In other words, try my hardest to breast feed.
Don't be too beat up if breast feeding isn't for me.
Figure out some sort of routine that works for everyone.
Don't pull out all my hair.
Take time for myself.
Accept help when needed.
Learn to be a little more easy going.
Spend more time with family.
Continue to travel some, even with a baby!

Career
Pass the ER certification exam.
Take on a new position at work?? (if it becomes available).

Health
Lose the baby weight.
After that, lose about another 25-30 lbs. yup. That'll be fun.

Well, let's see how I did, shall we?

I did, somehow, survive pregnancy and childbirth. As impossible as it seems looking back. 9 months of discomfort seems so long, and it was, but now that she's 10 months old on the outside, it seems like no time at all. I wish I could slow time down so she didn't have to grow so fast.

I did not, unfortunately, end up breastfeeding at all. I tried something I had not thought of at all. Pumping. I wasn't actually beat up when I wasn't able to breastfeed. I sort of felt as though it was a relief, somehow. Yes, I know, breast is best, and I'll tell people that until my dying day. BUT, if you're not happy and baby isn't feeding well, then you gotta do what you gotta do. Everyone is different, and breastfeeding isn't for everyone.

I guess that I do have some sort of routine down, sleep/nap wise, but I really haven't tackled the real challenge....That will happen when I go back to work. Then I'll REALLY need to get a good routine and schedule going, so everyone can be happy!

I did not pull out all my hair, it fell out on its own.

I did accept help when needed, I do believe that was always one of my strong suits in nursing school. I think it translated nicely to motherhood. I'm not wonder woman, and I can't do everything. There is no shame in getting help from time to time.

I actually did take time for myself, believe it or not. I started playing hockey, which I've talked about before on here, but it's something that I've really enjoyed. I've also been out to Zumba and Hoop Dance regularly.

I can't really say that I'm any more easy going. I knew that one wouldn't be an easy one. Maybe next year...

We did a little bit of traveling, not much though. We took Harper to Moncton once, and once to Yarmouth for Brian and Erin's wedding.

I think we've spent quite a bit of time with family, which is great.

I did not pass the Certified ER Nurse exam, I failed by 3%. Nothing like writing a major exam 6 weeks after delivering a baby. That was a great idea Winter.

I did actually get a new position at work, and I'm very excited about it. I'll be working 8 hour days now, instead of 12 hour rotating day and night shifts. I'll be working in the ER which will be a nice change from working down with the long term care patients. I'm not back until the first of March, but that won't be more than a blink and it'll be here.

I actually did end up losing my baby weight, just no more than that. I guess I have the coming year to work on that one!

This year has seen the biggest change of my life. The addition of Harper to our family. I'm so incredibly blessed to have her and Casey, and I'm so thankful for them. I'm excited to see what next year will bring us!

  1. Soak up the time you have left with your little one! I only had six weeks off and it was sooooo hard to go back. And congrats on losing the baby weight!

    1. Thank you!

I know, I'll be back to work before I know it! After the Christmas/New Year rush, we'll be going south in the middle of January, then by the time we get back I'll only have a month left! :( I've been working a shift every 2 weeks (or less) to try and keep my head in the game and stay with the ever evolving being that is health care.
